1930s Mercedes G4 Staff Car 1/35 ICM Box Opening and Build Part A

hey thanks for tuning in in this video we'll have a box opening of the icm 135th mercedes-benz g4 staff car and part a of the build the chassis suspension and drivetrain i hope you enjoy [Music] this will be my first non-armor car in over 30 years the last one i did was a testers ferrari daytona in yellow the extra challenge for me will be no weathering to hide my boo-boos there are chapters below for your convenience a quick history three still exists for public viewing that i'm aware of in southern california in spain and in the tsinzeim museum in germany that's the one i'm going to replicate the one in california was used in hogan's heroes the one that was used in der capitan i don't know if that was a mock-up or one from a private collection please let me know in the comments if you know it had an inline eight that went from five to five point four liters over its production run it was a 4 ton 6×4 off-road luxury car i found some neat pictures of the 5.0 m24 engine from a pristine 1935 500k this is a 2011 new tooling from icm according to scale mates on one side we have the gray and black two-tone paint scheme [Music] the paint legend 40 steps over eight pages engine chassis and wheels here more chassis drivetrain and suspension elements starting to build up the cabin superstructure and seats i'll add those seats at the end i bought some little magnets so i could remove and replace the hood cover mating of the chassis and superstructure and the final delicate editions so i'd like your opinion here the wheel color is the same as the main body color on the box and in the instructions however the london's enzyme has the wheels painted gloss black which also looks very nice let me know what you think looks better in the comments majority rule sprue a there's not a ton of detail but they're fairly clean there's a bit of flash and offset but i expected that [Music] sprue b i'm happy to see the surfaces are blemish for etho especially on what should be the pristine exterior panels spruce see the tires have the best texture of the whole kit so far [Music] sprue e sprue d the clear parts and the decals and now for the build part a what you'll see here is a weekend and two early mornings worth of modeling three pages of instructions four main steps starting with the engine and gearbox there's no indexing here so i use the flat end to start aligning it [Music] but for most pieces there were nice joins [Music] do [Music] that's it seven pieces and the block and gearbox are done after trying to clean up the flash and tabs i painted it in metallic gray which i think makes a nice steel color and it gives a non-perfect cast look [Music] i should have taken care of those seam lines before i painted there was no indexing for that part and it's narrow sprue goo to the rescue [Music] not perfect but a lot better [Music] using pictures of the m24 engine i tried to replicate the black steel and aluminum parts [Music] i must not have recorded it i went over the details with a touch of black panel liner [Music] the exhaust manifold has a unique color on the real engine i'm giving it a light wash of light rust [Music] [Music] i tried to put this where you'd think it goes over the four holes at the top according to the instructions and trial fitting this is where it goes [Music] i'll paint the distributor cap later [Music] now for the chassis [Music] this was typical of the parts stout tabs and a flash seam [Music] for flat surfaces i prefer the back of the blade i don't have to worry about gouging as much [Music] [Music] [Music] that all went together smooth this alclad black primer is great it leaves a durable coat that's between matte and satin it's an enamel but sprays great with about 25 leveling thinner [Music] then you join the chassis halves and put the drivetrain in i decided to start here and work my way to the front [Music] [Music] for whatever reason the brace at the front didn't want to stay in so i hit it with a bunch of ca glue the two braces at the back went in just fine [Music] now for the suspension [Music] [Music] these clip stands are invaluable i think this was a fly tying tool once i got it at a garage sale [Music] on surfaces like this the back of the blade skates off so i use the blade [Music] to me a dark iron looks better when it dries [Music] a quick wash of light rust adds some visual interest [Music] sparingly adding some tamiya brown liner to the details [Music] [Music] and a little ak grease where i thought it would be [Music] [Music] that was ugly they're right on the curves so they didn't clean up perfectly looking at the instruction diagram this is the orientation i'm cleaning up the sanding marks with extra thin huge tab right next to the indexing pin [Music] the hole doesn't have the half moon shape of the tab [Music] [Music] the springs each came off with handling once you put these on it becomes more stable [Music] [Music] [Music] the instructions didn't give you an order but it went together fine like that [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] do [Music] i end up painting most of this black but i wanted the differential housings to look really good [Music] i'm wicking off most of the brown panel wash i want the effect to be really subtle [Music] do [Music] this indexed nicely [Music] [Music] i guess i didn't record putting on the front suspension sorry about that [Music] now just touching up the black and the steel [Music] in the photos this is like an orange red rust color this isn't exact but i like the color i wish i had more use for the orange brown [Music] last bit is this structural part [Music] and there we have it i'll add the exhaust bits when i add the body [Music] do [Music] lastly i want to thank you my subscribers for watching the videos and all the encouragement i really do appreciate it i'm inching closer to 500 subscribers and will do a nice giveaway when i reach that milestone [Music] thank you so much for watching i hope everyone is well and happy modeling
