How to prepare a model car body for paint

In today's video, I am going to show you
how to prepare a car body for paint. The first thing you want to do is
take a permanent marker and Mark off all the raised mold lines. The ones that you wish to sand off from the car body. I have already marked off most of the mold lines. I am showing you the last line I want to mark here. I am then going to sand these lines off. In this video I am going to try to explain how to get car body ready for paint. There is a lot of work involved in getting a body ready to be primed and painted. There is filling involved, there is sanding, cleaning, priming, sanding again and more priming. I do not have video for some steps. But I have video for most steps. I am going to try and show you all the steps. I will also explain all the steps that you need to go through to get a car body ready to be painted. Here I am sanding off all the mold lines that I have highlighted with the permanent marker.

I keep sanding till I cannot see the marker color anymore. This tells me that most of the sanding has been done. I still check one more time to make sure there are no more mold lines. After I have removed the mold lines I like to scuff the body up with some sanding sticks and sanding paper. This helps the primer something to grip and work better. I use sandpaper or a rough sanding stick to scuff the body up as you can see here. Anything between 600 to about 2,000
grit should work fine. Next we can see some ejector pin
marks under the hood. I am going to sand these off first and then
fill them up with Perfect_Plastic_Putty.

Then I will see how that looks. I have sanded off the ejector pin marks, but there's still a gap there. I am going to use Perfect_Plastic_Putty to
try to fill this gap. This is a water based putty. I am going to place it in the ejector pin marks. Then clean that up with an earbud and water. There is still be some left there. (I do not have the video for this step) I will clean that up after I prime the body.

Something I like to do now is to clean
the body with water. I have waited for the putty to dry first. I have cleaned off a bit of the putty with an earbud and water. As I clean the body I make sure that there is no more dust left on it. It is now nice and clean. I am going to clean the hood as well. I like to use a little bit of soap and water I'm now going to wait for these to dry.
I usually leave them for about an hour. Once the body parts are dry, I will glue in the parts to complete the body. Glue the part under the hood that hooks it to the body. Glue parts to the body as well Wait for an hour for these to dry. Next I will go on to priming the body. Before we prime the body I like to
give it clean one more time with some Kleenex tissue paper. It really cleans the body well and removes any dust and any other foreign debris or particles on the body.

A small but very important step is to
make sure that your body is put on to some kind of platform. I like to use an old Tamiya Primer can under the body. I put some putty on top of the can and then put it under the body I also like to use alligator clips to hold any other body parts. I am going to use Tamiya Spray Can to prime the body The best thing to do with a spray can is to put it in warm water. I am going to fill up a bowl with warm water. Not boiling water, just really warm water Then put the can in the bowl and leave that for about five to ten minutes After you have taken the can out of the
water, give it a shake for about 30 seconds. Now we start priming the body. Try to keep the can about 30 cm away from the car at all times.

Move the can from side to side while rotating the car at the same time. As you see her. The video will explain this step. Here is the body all primed up. Now I am
going to look for mistakes, errors and dust marks. You can see there are a few marks here. I do not know if you can see on the video but there are little dots here. There are imperfections in other locations as well here. I am going to sand these off one more time Lets look and the hood .and see if that ejector pin mark is fixed. It is not fixed as can see here. I will sand this off again. I have a 2000 grit sandpaper, a
1000 grit sandpaper and a 400 grit sandpaper. First I am going to clean the imperfections up with the 400 grit sandpaper. Then I will use 1000 grit sandpaper. Finally I am going to give the entire body a
sand over with the 2,000 grit paper. After I have finished sanding the body, I will look over the body one more time to make sure there are no more imperfections left. After I have confirmed that all the
imperfections are are gone, I will clean the body one last time with some Kleenex.

Make sure there is no more dust or grime or any foreign particles. The last clean is very important. Make sure you do a very good clean.I like to put the parts in a plastic box. This helps to make sure that they're
protected from any dust at all times. I am now going to coat the body one more time with Tamiya Surface primer. After the parts are primed I let them dry
overnight in my box again. Here is the body all primed up and ready to be painted. No more imperfections left. It is now nice and smooth. I hope you guy liked the video. For more videos like this please subscribe to my channel. Scale_Modelling_Videos..
